We're REALLY excited to be taking part in a unique free festival / experiment / mashup taking place over the May Bank Holiday (Monday 3rd) at the Old Queen's Head in Islington.

Do You DIY? is a coming together of independent, DIY-minded labels, artists, producers, fanzines, media, promoters and club nights. Throughout the day (midday-midnight) there will be a plethora of records, listening booths, zines, discussions, DJ sets and yes, performances.

Already confirmed are indie favourites such as Fortuna Pop!, Fierce Panda, Memphis Industries etc and we're completely flabbergasted that in their wisdom the organisers have asked yours truly to put in an appearance as well! Accordingly we will have a stall and a big crew there including Lonely Joe Parker / Jackie Paper / Moneytree joint sets, as well as new grunge trio Ann The Arc.

The whole shebang runs from 12pm-midnight, and is FREE before 6pm.

We'll be running a minibus up from Southampton for peeps that want to come for the ride.

We have always wanted to respond to your demands and make our artists' music as widely available as possible. Although virtually the whole back catalogue is available online through all good stores and Spotify, nice things like CDs, tapes and vinyl have, up till now, only been available at gigs and a few stores in the South (like Rough Trade and various Oxfam Music stores). We know this has been pissing you off, because you keep emailing us to say so!

Having discussed all the mail-order options available we decided to keep costs down. By working in-house we can manage this, and stay true to the DIY ethos of labels that inspired us, heroes like Dischord and Chemikal Underground. We're really excited that now our fans can get high-quality physical releases at the lowest possible price, wherever they are.

So, as of TODAY you can order acclaimed releases by Moulettes, Haunted Stereo, Moneytree, Jackie Paper and Lonely Joe Parker - the service will expand over the coming weeks to include the entire Sotones back-catalogue.

To get the ball rolling, with every order placed this week we'll stick in a free copy (while stocks last) of our very first ever sampler, the individually-numbered, hand-assembled, Kruger-Magazine-endorsed 'Vol.11', which includes early tracks by Blakfish as well as Band Of Skulls...

What are you waiting for? Go hit the store now: http://www.sotones.co.uk/shop.php

FACEBOOK: here

Every year we like to throw a big free party for everyone to welcome in the summer, and this year is no exception. It will be exceptional, though, in that we're also celebrating our third anniversary! So we've pulled in a brilliant bill of bands we all love, as well as some genuinely exciting emerging talent (and you know how picky we are)...

So on May Day (thats, like, the FIRST of May...) we're taking over the Hobbit in Southampton for an entire day of music and festivities. It's totally free whether you dip in to catch a few bands and enjoy a BBQ in the sunshine-y beer garden at the back, or hang tough for an unbelievable 8 HOURS OF MUSIC. We very much hope you manage to catch every single artist though as they are all very talented people that will aurally pleasure you in various diverse ways. There will also be cheapo drinks and BBQ in the garden. Plus Bank Holiday sun*.

Line-up confirmed so far includes: Anja McCloskey, Moneytree, Lonely Joe Parker, Pete Lyons, Sons and Lovers, El Raccoon, Baku Bankai, Viva Sleep & Nato

Join the Facebook event to get updates about the line-up, stage times and Campbell's top burger combo predictions.

So that's all for now, see you on May 1st for a big fat party!
Oh yeah: don't forget to vote!

Love, laters, ludo,
Sotones xx

*I'm actually going to go out on a limb here and guarantee good weather. Sue me.

Joe and Jackie's Oxjam split 12" gets a great review in this month's Fly, with Matt Golding kindly calling it a "split release of jaunty confidence and empathy. It's worth buying a turntable just to hear this"

Which is very exciting, because you can now order the 12" numbered vinyl (only 300) direct from Rough Trade here...

... the beast being the mysterious workings of the online music industry.. and the rumblings being our repertoire.

We have spent the last months negotiating and have appointed a digital distributor. As from this month, our digital releases will be handled worldwide by Believe Digital. They service music retailers around the world, including iTunes, eMusic, Napster and Amazon. We have also begun to deliver content to Spotify, the popular new on-demand streaming music service that has already revolutionised music listening in the UK.

We are all very excited to have moved into this new phase of business, which will let us concentrate on producing and promoting records as well as our showcase nights in Southampton, Brighton, London and Winchester.

Over the next few months we'll be steadily re-issuing our existing catalogue through these new channels, as well as gearing up for some great new releases, including:

  • Part II of Moneytree's 'The Great Indoors' triptych
  • A Peter Lyons / The Moulettes AA single
  • A live LP specially recorded by Peter Lyons with his backing band Fiction Theatre
  • A split 12" EP for Oxjam featuring Lonely Joe Parker and Jackie Paper (Thomas Tantrum)

See you soon!

The new Sotones website at www.sotones.co.uk launches today, marking another lurch forward for the Southampton-based co-operative.

The new service gives users who register the chance to comment on literally every part of the site, artists, records and events as well as access to exclusive downloads, reduced entry on some events and secret parties.

In future users will also be able to mix and match playlists from Sotones' artists back catalogue - over 200 songs from 20 of the South's best acts, comment on each other's profiles and vote for their favourite tracks each month.

Web guru Ape Kerroj said, "It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here! We hope all everyone appreciates the work we've put in, but most of all, enjoys themselves spazzing out to some great music!"

Notes to editors:
User playlist services will be available from the end of March worldwide.
This is not a download service, though tracks will be linked for download with online music providers to be finalized.

See more:
Jackie Paper Peter Lyons Moulettes The Dress Up Room

Well, spring is here, flowers are blooming, homebrew's-a-bubbling... and so we proudly present to you our newest and rudest members:

  • The Moulettes have worked with Modernaire and been in exile in, variously, Manchester, Brighton and London for the last year or so - where their !2 Bar Club night was voted 'Most Trendy' by Time Out (oo-er)! Don't let that put you off though - their blend of perfect raucous folk melodies and Bad Seeds sensibilities are a treat to the ears.
  • Jackie Paper, better known as Dave Miatt (Thomas Tantrum, or, if you're from Southampton, 'force of sodden debauchery'.) Long before he ever wielded an electric at Maida Vale, however, Dave was busking up and down the pubs and bars of Bevois Valley (notorious Southampton sleaze-ridden club strip) with an anti-folk set of delicacy and intensity, recalling Jeffery Lewis-meets-Michael Jackson
  • Young Peter Lyons already has three albums under his belt, including one on MC for Tape Club Records - now sold out. His music sounds like Arcade Fire produced by Beck meeting Japanese ace Cornelius, which would be somewhere over the Pacific presumably. Apt, because his prolific work is also infused with genuine sunny tropical optimism, but sea-lorne longing too.
  • Southampton's newest band The Dress Up Room have only had a handful of gigs to date but we begged them to work with us having heard them rehearse week in, week out through the door at Planet Sounds. They just keep getting better and better, refining their Placebo-meets-The Strokes-meets-Television noise towards perfection.. stay tuned..
Keep checking back to Sotones.co.uk, visit their myspaces, and look out for them in a record store / toilet venue / shopping centre opening near you soon!

Unknown to the guys at the time, their sizzling (or should that be sozzled) Main Stage performance at Access Festival 2007 was in fact recorded in super-high-fidelity 16-track ADAT sound.

Hopefully this means we should be able to release a live EP sometime very soon. All profits will go to Society of St. James, a Southampton-based charity working with the homeless and those in vulnerable accomodation.

Speaking to Sotones, Joe Parker said, "It was a fantastic day - just being asked to play Access was great, but the event itself was fucking awesome. Now finding out there's a decent live recording is a bonus, and if we can raise a bit more cash, quids in!"

We're also approaching Fleeingnewyork, who rocked the park when they headlined Access 2007 this year.

So...

It's bye bye to the Beaux Hardts (plus Nath and Freya) who are leaving today on a (carbon offset) jetplane. They're flocking south to Barcelona so they can party, bring the noise to Spain and watch all the Saints' european matches at Barca at a fraction of the price.

Don't despair though, cos we're going to make sure you can get your hands on a copy of their amazing debut EP 'Leisure' one way or another and we very much hope they'll be back to tour in 2008...

A massive thanks to everyone who came down to the Beaux Hardts' leaving do/testimonial/piss up at the Talking Heads on Friday. A big boosucks to those who didn't, you missed an amazing night.

Moneytree kicked the night off with a stripped down, ferocious set as a three-piece. The new shizz from 'The Great Indoors Pt2' sounded amazing, can't wait for the release!!!
Then the Beaux Hardts stepped up to fucking well lay down the law with a rocking set that was suprisingly tight for two wee lads who'd been drinking since 4. The encores! Bob n Davo were joined onstage by Joe Parker and the rest of the Power, brought to you today by Jimi Ray and Cambell Austin. What might turn out to be the last ever Power set featuring that line-up proved to be equal parts comedy, rock and opera with frying amps, singing crowds and flying Austins. Both sets got recorded so a release may be on the way.
Brighton visitors Everyone To The Anderson impressed with steely-sharp shards of angular rock not a million miles away from any number of Dischord acts and we hope they come again.
Fleeingnewyork were thus unlucky to take to the stage considerably later - and better lubricated - than they might have been had everything else run on time, but then, so were the rabble. Forty minutes of glorious bluesy stomping later no-one really cared. Shapes were thrown.
Those same shapes were twisted, mangled and tortured by the electro-sleaze-a capella that one Edward J. Hicks somehow managed to smuggle into the party and to be honest we were about as scared as entertained... it.. ain't natural...
Chin Music sadly couldn't play on Friday due to illness, but we caught them back at top notch at the Old Fat Cat on Tuesday, all back in the UK at last (oh the irony) and ready to rock 'Temper Temper' which we're decided here and now to think of as a new release.

DJs Jimi Ray and Joe Allen did plenty sexy dance.....

Brilliant news for rock everywhere, as you can now get the awesome Chin Music debut LP 'Temper Temper' on iTunes!

We're dead excited about this as it means anyone can now get their hands on some top-quality Chin Music... music. (oh, the puns)

Seriously, it's an awesome record (our faves have to be the sucker punch into of Compression/Right Where We Started/Contours) and we all wish Neil and the gang best of luck!
